A new study conducted by Copenhagen Economics offers a deep dive into the lives of the commerce platform Wolt’s courier partners across 23 countries, highlighting their diverse backgrounds, work habits, and the flexibility they enjoy.

Wolt couriers come from all walks of life: they are professionals, students, caregivers, and self-employed individuals who use flexible part-time work to complement their busy lives and achieve personal and financial goals.

Key Study Insights:

1.     Balancing Other Commitments
Wolt courier partners benefit from the flexibility the platform provides, allowing them to work when and as much as they want to balance other responsibilities.

In Luxembourg:

  • 40% of courier partners have other full- or part-time jobs
  • 30% are self-employed outside the gig economy
  • 23% are students,
  • 10% stay at home to care for their family or are retired.

These findings demonstrate the diversity of couriers’ lives and how flexible work helps them manage personal and professional goals.

2.     Diverse Backgrounds
The study shows the following demographics among courier partners in Luxembourg:

  • The average courier partner is 34 years old, and
  • 18 % have university degrees.

3.     Work Flexibility

On average, courier partners in Luxembourg deliver with Wolt seven hours per week, according to internal data and 70% of them particularly appreciate the flexibility Wolt offers to decide how many or few hours to deliver in any given week, which they cannot get elsewhere.

The survey results show that flexible platform work is a valuable addition to the labor market that anyone can find worthwhile. Partnering with Wolt helps people achieve their goals by earning what they need, when they need it, and on their own terms. Tuomas Hurmerinta, Global Head of Operations at Wolt.

Over 260,000 courier partners worldwide serve millions of customers who place orders from 170,000 venues on the Wolt platform. Wolt’s internal data shows that courier partners make deliveries an average of 8 hours per week, with 83% delivering fewer than 20 hours weekly. For most, Wolt is a preferred option for part-time, flexible work.

The flexibility that courier partners are offered through the independent contractor model seems to be the key thing that attracts people to this line of work. Seven out of ten of our local couriers say they particularly appreciate that with Wolt they are free to decide how many or few hours to deliver in any given week, which they cannot get elsewhere. When I talk to our courier partners, they confirm they love being their own bosses, able to decide when and how much they work, and how they fit work into their schedules. This is true freedom, they tell me.  Tomás Etcheverry, General Manager at Wolt Luxembourg.
