Wolt launches split payments for group orders in Romania

Customers can now pay directly in the app for their own items, when ordering together with friends, family or colleagues.

Wolt has launched the Split Payments feature in Romania, making group orders easier by removing the need for one person to pay for everything upfront. The feature went live at the end of July, and Wolt's rollout to other markets will continue in the coming period.

Group orders have always been one of the simplest ways to order together with friends, family or colleagues. Until now, however, one person had to pay for the entire order and then collect the money from everyone else afterwards. With Split Payments, each participant can pay directly in the Wolt app for their own items only.

The feature is designed for everyday situations, such as office lunches, get-togethers between students, family dinners or evenings spent with friends. For workplace orders, people can also use eligible meal benefits when paying for their share.

Shared costs, such as delivery and service fees, are automatically split between group members. If the person who starts the order has an active subscription on the Wolt platform, the entire group can benefit from its perks, including free delivery or discounts.

For many people, having to collect money from everyone else is one of the biggest hassles when ordering together. Wolt's internal data shows that this is, in fact, one of the main reasons people abandon a group order before completing it. Split Payments responds to this real need and is part of an ongoing process through which Wolt is working to simplify the entire ordering experience, step by step.

“Food has always been a reason for people to come together, but ordering as a group hasn’t always been as simple as we’d like it to be. More often than not, one person ends up having to manage the bill. Split Payments removes that hassle, so people can focus on the time spent together, not on who owes what at the end,” said Alexandru Ștefan, Country Lead and Head of Account Management, Wolt Romania.

How it works:

  • One person starts a group order, selects the Split Payments option and sends the group an invite link or a QR code;
  • Participants join the order, add their own items and pay directly in the Wolt app for their share;
  • Service and delivery fees are automatically split between group members. If the person who started the order has a subscription on the Wolt platform, eligible perks can be applied to the entire order;
  • Once all participants have completed the process, the person who created the order confirms it, and it is delivered to a single address shared by the group;
  • Each participant receives their own payment confirmation and can see the purchase in their personal order history.

The launch of Split Payments continues the series of features developed by Wolt to make the ordering experience increasingly simple, alongside Gifting, which lets users send an order together with a personal message, or Scheduled Orders, which lets users plan their deliveries in advance.
